Man devises many kinds of love that are all false, like many gods. But there is only one true God and one divine love, which is love par excellence. Love is the intrinsic attribute of God (cf. 1 Jn. 4:8) and the sign that it abides in us is that we are unable to hate, no matter how We are provoked or how many stumbling blocks the devil casts into our way. For the heart in which divine love has dwelt cannot hate, neither can it desire to hate for it survives only by the Will to love.
We cannot train ourselves to love, just as man cannot train himself to see God or acquire the Holy Spirit. Every “love” that is developed by training or created by drilling is anything but a likeness of love — a human counterfeit.
The ability of the heart to love and hate is an indication of this counterfeit human love. It is always compliant and responsive as it can comply to love and comply to hate.
If a man regrets any hatred that moves in his heart at any moment or for any reason, it is a sign that he has begun to prepare his heart for divine love. To recoil from anger, blame oneself, and conquer one’s bad temper is a sign that one is beginning to prepare one’s heart for the indwelling of divine love. However, man can only cease from hatred or abandon anger completely by the indwelling of divine love.
Upon the foundation of divine love, one can build — and even must build — all meekness, humility, chastity, lowliness, joy, peace, patience, and compassion, etc. Conversely, nothing whatsoever can be built on anything other than love!
For this reason, divine love is the more excellent way (cf. 1 Cor 12:31), the fulfilling of the law (cf. Rom 13:10) and the great and first commandment (cf. Matt 22:37-38). It is also our sole aim which should be embedded in our daily and narrow way “that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge” [Eph. 3:18). This verse was written to stipulate, “that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith” (Eph. 3:17).
Beloved, the signs of divine love and its activity in one’s heart are themselves the signs of election. They are the action of the Holy Spirit and the secret of growth in the knowledge of God. They are the sign that we have union with Him and receive His gifts in all things so that “speaking the truth in love, [we] may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ” (Eph 4:15). Moreover, growth itself is the dynamic nature of love, whether it is growth in knowledge, truth, humility, fasting, vigil, silence, or tears as when “every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love”
[Eph. 4:16).
Divine love holds worldly honor in extreme contempt. Human honor is the honor of the fallen Adam. It is an obstacle to the unity that builds up the body of Christ causing a great barrier in the way of union with God. - Matthew the Poor, from Sojourners: Monastic Letters and Spiritual Teachings from the Desert, letter #4, "The Most Excellent Way"
